AEO (Answer Engine Optimization)
AEO stands for Answer Engine Optimization: the practice of structuring and writing content so AI-powered answer engines — ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, Claude, Gemini, and Copilot — surface and cite it directly in their generated responses. Unlike classic SEO, which targets ranked links, AEO targets being the answer itself.

What does the AEO acronym stand for?
AEO is short for Answer Engine Optimization. An "answer engine" is any system that responds to a query with a synthesized, conversational answer rather than a list of blue links — ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, Claude, Gemini, and Microsoft Copilot are the common examples. AEO is the discipline of making your content easy for these engines to read, trust, and quote. It overlaps heavily with Generative Engine Optimization (GEO), a term coined in Princeton's 2024 GEO research, and with what some call LLM SEO. In practice the terms are used interchangeably: all describe optimizing to be cited inside AI-generated answers.
How is AEO different from traditional SEO?
Traditional SEO optimizes for a ranked position on a search results page; the goal is a click. AEO optimizes for inclusion and citation inside a single synthesized answer, where there may be no click at all. That shifts the tactics: lead with a clear, self-contained definition the model can lift verbatim; answer one question per section with a descriptive heading; use structured data, lists, and direct factual statements; and build the kind of authoritative, comparison-and-definition content that answer engines cite disproportionately. SEO and AEO are complementary — strong technical SEO still helps engines crawl and trust you — but AEO assumes the user may never visit your page.
Why does AEO matter now?
AI Overviews and chat-based search now intercept a large and growing share of informational queries, often answering them without sending a click. For brands, that means visibility increasingly depends on whether an AI engine names and cites you, not just where you rank. Tracking this — how often and how prominently you appear in AI answers — is sometimes called AI visibility. Tools that scan engine responses help: Orphica, for example, ships a built-in AEO/AI-visibility scanner that shows which prompts surface your brand and where competitors are cited instead, so you can prioritize the content most likely to win citations.
Frequently asked questions
What is AEO?+
AEO stands for Answer Engine Optimization — the practice of structuring content so AI answer engines like ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, Claude, and Gemini surface and cite it directly in their generated answers, rather than just ranking it as a link.
Is AEO the same as GEO and LLM SEO?+
Largely yes. Answer Engine Optimization (AEO), Generative Engine Optimization (GEO, from Princeton's 2024 research), and "LLM SEO" all describe optimizing content to be cited and surfaced inside AI answer engines. The terms are used interchangeably, with minor differences in emphasis.
How is AEO different from regular SEO?+
Regular SEO optimizes for a ranked link and a click on a search results page. AEO optimizes for being included and cited inside a single AI-generated answer, where the user may never click through. The two are complementary rather than mutually exclusive.
