Answer Engine Optimization

Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is the practice of creating and structuring content so AI-powered answer engines — like ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, Claude and Copilot — cite it as a source in their generated answers. Where traditional SEO aims to rank a page, AEO aims to get the page quoted.

How is AEO different from SEO?

Traditional SEO optimizes to rank a page in a list of blue links; AEO optimizes to be selected and quoted inside an AI-generated answer. Because answer engines extract passages rather than whole pages, a well-structured page can be cited even when it isn't the #1 result. AEO builds on good SEO — crawlability and authority still matter — but adds an emphasis on extractable structure and citable evidence.

How do you optimize for answer engines?

Three pillars: structure (lead with a direct, self-contained answer; use clear headings, comparison tables, and FAQ blocks so passages stand alone), authority (cite sources, include statistics and expert quotes, show freshness dates), and presence (be cited where AI looks — review sites, Reddit, Wikipedia, and roundups, not just your own domain). Adding schema markup (FAQPage, Product, Organization) helps engines parse your content.

Why does AEO matter now?

AI answer experiences — Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT search, Perplexity — now intercept a large and growing share of informational queries, often answering without a click. If your brand isn't cited in those answers, you're invisible for those questions. AEO is how you stay discoverable as search shifts from links to answers.

Frequently asked questions

What is Answer Engine Optimization (AEO)?+

AEO is the practice of structuring and writing content so AI answer engines — ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, Claude and Copilot — cite it as a source. It's the answer-era counterpart to SEO: instead of ranking a link, you aim to be quoted inside the AI's answer.

Is AEO the same as GEO?+

Largely yes. Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) — a term from Princeton's 2024 research — and Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) both describe optimizing content to be surfaced and cited by AI answer/generative engines. People use the terms interchangeably.

Does AEO replace SEO?+

No — it extends it. Crawlability, relevance, and authority from SEO are the foundation answer engines draw on. AEO adds extractable structure, citable evidence (stats, sources), and third-party presence on top.

How do I measure AEO?+

Track AI visibility: run your key queries through ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews and record whether you're cited and from which page. Orphica includes a built-in AI-visibility scanner that automates this.
